The streets of Joondalup CBD have been converted overnight into a 2.4km motorsport track, ready to be ignited with the colour and sound of 150 cars in full flight for the Joondalup City Sprint.

The Sprint is the highlight of the Joondalup Festival of Motoring programme, which is in its third and final day of providing free family entertainment with a motoring flair.

Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob officially opened the course by waving a flag – a signal to the competitors that the speed limit in Joondalup CBD had been removed and it was time to put their driving prowess to the test.

“We are confident the Joondalup Sprint will become one of the iconic motorsport events in Perth,” said Mayor Jacob at the start line.

“Car fans have been in motoring heaven over the past two days with hundreds of vehicles of all makes and models – from all parts of the globe – on display.

“Joondalup is buzzing. Attracting big events like the Joondalup Festival of Motoring is part of the City’s strategy to position Joondalup as a Destination City, creating new opportunities for our community and local businesses by attracting visitors with a diverse mix of iconic events with local, national, and international appeal.”

Unlike a race event where the cars grid up and leave the start line in a group, the Joondalup City Sprint sees cars start individually with a 30 second gap in between. This format sees not just race-prepared cars enter but also encourages drivers of garaged pride and joy cars to stretch their legs in a competitive setting with minimal risk of damage.

The action will not only be on track today – over 1,000 vehicles are categorised into five regionally themed zones that best represent the vehicle’s origin in the Automotive Worlds precinct. Spectators can also meander through the rare vehicles on display and even enjoy a motoring themed cocktail at Cars & Cocktails Kennards Hire Central Park. A photography competition, live music, activations from local businesses and a variety of food trucks are also part of the free family event’s programme.

The Joondalup Festival of Motoring runs until 5pm, Sunday 30 October. Due to the road closures, attendees are encouraged to take advantage of the close-by public transport options, with only a five minute walk between Joondalup Train Station and Central Park.

The Joondalup Festival of Motoring is held from 28 – 30 October and is a partnership between the City of Joondalup and Justin Hunt Management.
